Ship Shape in Eureka and Newport Beach

EUREKA: The tall sailing ships Hawaiian Chieftian and Lady Washington sail into Humboldt Bay (1011 Waterfront Drive) for tours, sailngs and battle reenactments April 11-20, 2014. The all steel Hawaiian Chieftan is Gaff-rigged Topsail Ketch commissioned in 1988 for cargo trade among the Hawaiian Islands. In 1993 Hawaiian Chieftain engaged in its first mock sea battle against Lady Washington (official ship of the State of Washington) on San Francisco Bay. The two sailing vessels make educational cruises  along the West Coast throughout the year. Lady Washington arrives in Eureka April 10, 2014 for an 11-day visit featuring public sailing excursions, walk-on tours, and educational programs. Her companion ship, Hawaiian Chieftain, arrives on April 15 after a five-day stop in Fort Bragg.  Adventure Sails open to the public:  $33-63 on April 12, 16, 19, 20, 2014.  For information call 800-200-5239.

NEWPORT BEACH: Newport to Ensenada (newporttoensenada.com) Launch Event on Sunday, April 13, 2014, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.  officially kicks-off  in Balboa Village, home of the Fun Zone. This year’s festivities in Balboa Village includes live music, nautical displays, art exhibits, a La Strada dell’ Arte chalk festival, Taste of Balboa food samplings from local restaurants, children’s boat building and other family activities. Guests can also tour a selection of official Newport to Ensenada race boats docked by the ferry and learn more about some of the crews’ preparations for this world-famous event. Admission to ExplorOcean and the kick-off festival is free. The annual boat race which began in 1948 leaves Newport Beach Harbor on the morning of April 25. Usually 400-500 sailboats participate in the race, and the public comes out to watch them head for Ensenada, Mexico.
