Left photo: The biggest waves in the mainland US can reach over 50 feet off the shore of Half Moon Bay at a place called Mavericks. Only the world’s strongest surfers can handle such dangerous conditions. But there’s no guarantee that big waves will arrive by the time Mavericks Invitational ends its open-call season November 1, 2013 – March 31, 2014. Mavericks Surf Invitational was canceled a year ago due to lack of quality waves. Will the monster waves arrive in time for this year’s event? See updates: mavericksinvitational.com
Right photo: Siskiyou Sled Dog Races in Weed are a post-Christmas treat. Last year the lack of snow canceled the event. 2013-2014 winter snow and precipitation levels are the lowest in over 100 years, and as a result the Kids’ Dog Sledding Rides set for Jan. 12 have been postponed. If they get snow, the kids’ rides may occur after the Siskyou Sled Dog Races February 8 & 9, 2014. Will there be snow for the Sled Dog Races? Updates: siskiyousleddograces.com
