There aren’t many things about growing up in Kansas City, MO that people actually brag about–except BBQ. In California and throughout the U.S. when groups hold BBQ cook-offs and competitions, the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioning is taken seriously.  The KCBS distinction turns the heat up an extra notch, bringing out chefs who really know how to smoke their stuff!

BBQ Season openers in California include Elk Grove’s BBQ Championship, part of the Boots Scootin’ and B-B-Q Western Festival (elkgrovewesternfestival.org) held May 2-4, 2014 at Elk Grove Regional Park. This is a KCBS sanctioned event.  In Southern California approx. 450 miles from Elk Grove the Lake Elsinore Best of the Best BBQ Championship and Boat Show takes place on Saturday, May 3.  With $10,000 in cash and prizes, this KCBS event really cooks!

We’ve compiled a list of BBQ events and have discovered cook-offs and competitions this year in Anderson, Angels Camp, Bakersfield, Brentwood, Clayton, Huntington Beach, Mammoth, Martinez, Montague,  Oakhurst, Oakland, Oroville, Redding, Rohnert Park, San Jose, Santa Clara, Temecula, Valley Center, Victorville and Vista.
