30 college sailing teams from 11 states and 60 California high school teams competed this past weekend in Long Beach in the largest combined high school/college regatta in the country, now in its 30th year in 2013. Two-person crews raced dinghies in Long Beach harbor to the backdrop of the city skyline, some wind, and a little rain. Hundreds of spectactors watched the race from Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, cheering on their schools and teams over a two day period. Long Beach is known as the Aquatic Capitol of America and the race proved it to be true. Cruise ships, tall ships, tankers and freighters, and even the Queen Mary historic ship berthed as an attraction in Long Beach harbor were all visible to competitors and spectators.   The event was sponsored by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, hosted by the USC Sailing Team and organized by the U.S. Sailing Center of Long Beach, according to Mike Segerblom, event founder who serves as executive director of the United States Sailing Center and head coach of the USC sailing team.
