Sunken Pirate Ship Resurrected at Big Bear Lake

A one-third scale 16th century Spanish galleon replica prop in the movie “Time Bandits,” has risen from the depths of Big Bear Lake after spending approx. two weeks under water.  The recent storm sunk the pirate ship, owned &  operated as a tour/party boat by Loren Hafen. He used his knowledge as a certified scuba diver to attach deflated air-lift bags to the bottom of the ship, then inflate them with an air compressor. The air-lift bags used for salvaging underwater objects such as yachts and planes, helped raise the ship to a vertical position. Once  up, a hole was found in the ship. The owner hopes to refurbish his treasured boat and have it working again by summer when the tourist crowd returns and Holloway’s Marina celebrates its 100-year anniversary.

After Time Bandits 1981 movie release the boat was used for tours in Los Angeles and Newport Beach harbors. Our SeeCalifornia.com staff took a ride on it (shown in photos) on Big Bear Lake. If it’s able to float, we’ll ride it again!  Look to bigbear.com for info on this and other attractions.
