If companies that have come to call Sunnyvale home such as Yahoo, Apple, Nokia, Broadcom, AMD, LinkedIn, Juniper Networks, Motorola Mobility and Google, don’t ring a bell, you better head to Silicon Valley this weekend for the 100th anniversary of the “town” that loves technology, but was founded on true grit. Sunnyvale, whose roots stem from the California gold rush era, celebrates its 100th birthday with a parade and lots of old fashioned events. A whiskers contest, scarecrow contest in which you must make your scarecrow look like some historic figure from the city’s past, and not to be missed–a Centennial Parade on August 25, 2012, marching from Fremont High School to the Community Center from 10 a.m. to noon, are part of the fun. The high-tech city filled with innovation is hosting a completely low tech celebration that’s very old fashion. Hayrides in the Heritage Orchard, blacksmith demonstrations, a 1912 general store, turn of the century Sunnyvale downtown and model train diorama, plus much more, are free to enjoy and you are invited. For a full line up events see sunnyvale100.com . Here are more 2012 Centennial celebrations throughout California.
