NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. – Two girls skate the boardwalk, then head to the Balboa Pier for ice cream at Ruby’s shake shack window.

As Californians struggle to get healthy and lose weight, recent data suggests that a lot of our problems stem from lifestyle and not completely diet. When you visit California’s mountains and beaches this summer you’ll see lots of overweight people, but the ones you’ll notice are those on the move, getting exercise. They skate, they bike, they hike–and they’re usually a little thinner and healthier looking than the rest. You often see them snacking on ice cream, corn dogs and other fattening foods, which can be totally frustrating to those of us trying to “lose”.

Among the successes in losing weight during stressful times, several new theories suggest you don’t have to diet. You just need to change your lifestyle. Among the tips:

  • Ditch the addiction to your smart phone and computer. It creates extra stress that you never recognize.
  • Spend 15-30 minutes per day of quiet time to yourself meditating or simply relaxing and visualizing.
  • Those who limit their computer time to 3 hours per day add 2 years to their life expectancy.
  • Stress is the #1 cause of inability to lose weight in many people.  Cut the stress and the weight loss will follow.
  • Drop all sugar drinks and artificial drinks. Aim toward water beverages without sugar, fillers, flavors. If you can drink coffee without milk and drink water throughout the day, you’ll drop up to several thousand calories!
