There are hundreds of songs about getting funky, including popular hits such as “Play That Funky Music (White Boy)” by Wild Cherry and “Gettin’ Funky” by SWV. Gettin’ Funky with performing artist Snoop Dogg, has a simple refrain: “Funky funky, we’re getting funky, funky funky.” It’s not hard to learn the lyrics, but truth is, you’ll probably NOT hear that tune performed at Long Beach Funk Fest, held in Snoop Dogg’s home town. Long Beach’s very own Hip hop, reggae, dub and G-Funk recording artist may be there in heart and soul, however, as a one-of-a-kind event explores the outer bounds and inner workings of FUNK. The celebration of music and culture takes to Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach for some get-down action. The Funk Fest is an annual, free street festival that you have to see to understand. It includes stages with bands, artists, and street dancing past sundown. It takes place on August 18, 2012.
Another kind of “funky” also happens this weekend in Cotati. The Cotati Accordion Festival includes hoola hoops, accordion jams and top accordion musicians. Funk is everywhere you look on this special weekend in August. Wherever you are and whatever you do, get funky!
