Right: On New Year’s Eve 1940 residents of Del Mar were in a festive mood and there were parties everywhere. Around 8:45 p.m. a freight train plunged down an 65 foot embankment when a bluff collapsed. “By mid-morning, Ninth and 10th streets were crammed with onlookers, and not long afterward, there were hot dog wagons, popcorn vendors and souvenir hawkers at the scene.
