Pictures: “Ugly dogs” from the Sonoma-Marin “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest. If you have an ugly dog, you best stay clear of the world’s most beautiful stars, recent winners at the legendary Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show inside Madison Square Garden in New York. Never the two worlds shall meet. But there’s a place where ugly dogs can shine, and win money for being so.
Last year’s “World’s Ugliest Dog” winner, Yoda, recently passed away in his sleep at the age of 15. Officials at the annual contest held at Sonoma-Marin County Fair send their regrets and say that a new “ugly dog” won’t be selected till the contest on June 22, 2012. There’s an online contest where you can submit ugly dog photos for viewers to vote on, but that’s just for fun. The voting doesn’t influence the judging at the fair, say the organizers of this beloved event that receives worldwide media attention.
If you have a really ugly dog, you can enter the contest held in Petaluma. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.sonoma-marinfair.org or requested by calling 707-283-3247 (FAIR). Entry is free until the day of the contest when it is $20 to enter.
