Pictured is a patch of wild blackberries in a field on the edge of downtown Mendocino. The right photo shows the berries growing near a thistle.

You’re walking along in a field when your eyes pop onto something bright and berry. On closer inspection,  you realize you have come across wild, edible blackberries. Though not advised to put one in your mouth without washing it first, you can consume blackberries knowing this fruit is chockfull of benefits to body & mind.

California is the 2nd leading state in the nation under Oregon for the production of blackberries. While the U.S. is the third largest producer of these berries worldwide, we still must import them. A mere 15% of  blackberries served come from the U.S. with the remaining 85% imported from Canada in July and August, and Mexico and Chile from November through May.
