She’s not navigating the biggest ship in the sea but the female “driver” who steers the colorful Aqualink catamaran operated by Long Beach Transit must pass through channels, by big freighters, and park next to cruise ships and Queen Mary. She’s the first female ship captain we’ve seen steering public transportation boats in the Long Beach fleet and her work is impressive as she handles her vessel with precision. Women work in numerous jobs traditionally held by men, but it wasn’t until 2007 that a female was hired as the first ship captain of a major cruise line (Royal Caribbean International.) Since then several women have been hired as captains of cruise vessels, but the US Navy actually has been making waves with equal opportunity for women since 1990 when Rear Admiral Marsha J. Evans became the first woman to command a Naval Station, Treasure Island, San Francisco.
