One of the biggest, best reasons to visit Lancaster is the annual California Poppy Festival. Celebrating the amazing, bright orange blooms you'll see 15 miles outside of town at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, the festival was founded 20 years ago to pay homage to the California state flower, and celebrate Earth Day, as well. The two-day event held in April annually succeeds in providing festivities, fun, food, and good times for all who come. Held two days in April, the festival is sure to set records for providing great cuisine, shopping, and entertainment. -poppyfestival.com
The Poppy Reserve report for 2011 says that the poppies are shining in their glory and are offering scattered displays. Oddly, it isn't one of the best years but still, there is much to see and enjoy. There's an eight mile trail providing an easy hike. Take water, wear sunblock, and dress in layers, say locals. The desert provides a climate that can catch up with you fast when you suddenly find yourself over-heated or dehydrated. During the festival and throughout the spring, temperatures generally range in the pleasant mid-80s during the day.
