Each year people along the coast of California and at its inland lakes, make a date on January 1st for a chill & thrill to bring good luck, so some believe. The Polar Plunge is a time honored tradition that has been celebrated around the world in even much cold places where the water temps are close to freezing! In California the Pacific Ocean temperature on January 1 ranges from 55 to 59 degrees. That's cold enough!
Polar Plunge events happen in San Pedro, Los Angeles, San Diego and Northern California. One event near & dear to our heart raises funds for local charities. The Surf City Splash in Huntington Beach is held January 1, 2011. Revelers are encouraged to dress in glittery New Year's party hats and other costumes, that will be judged, along with the oldest and youngest participants and furthest distance traveled. A special award will go to the largest group, organization or club. Recognition will also go to local volunteers and city officials.
The HB International Surfing Museum will benefit from suggested $10 /person donations received for Certificates of "Lion-Heartedness" or Certificates of "Sanity" at this annual event. The splash begins at Noon.
From 9:30-11:30 enjoy Pancake Breakfast for $5 donation. Local Lions now host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the pier each New Year's Day. Donations for the food and beverages support Lion charities such as Canine Companions for Independence, Lions Hearing Clinic and Research Center, SightFirst Foundation, Therapeutic Riding Center, Project Self-Sufficiency, etc. Other activities include craft-fair vendors on Pier Plaza and discounts from downtown merchants.
