COARSEGOLD Tarantula Festival October 25, 2014, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
How would you like an oversized spider to land on you? The signs are posted warning you of a tarantula crossing at the annual Tarantual Festival. The big, beefy spiders strike fear in the hearts of arachnophobes, but tarantulas are some of the least aggressive and least dangerous spiders around! Here are more bug festivals.
Five things to know about Tarantulas:
1. Female tarantulas can live 30 years or longer.
2. The largest tarantulas have a leg span of nearly 10 inches–the size of a dinner plate.
3. Tarantulas are docile and rarely bite people. A fall can be fatal to a tarantula.
4. Tarantulas defend themselves by throwing needle-like, barbed hairs at their attackers. Some people may suffer a serious allergic reaction as a result.
5. Tarantulas ambush small prey at night, stealthily sneaking up on a potential meal and then pouncing!
