The week of April 16-24, 2016 you can visit all national parks for free! America’s largest celebration of national heritage is near & dear to the hearts of Californians and their beloved Yosemite National Park Half Dome. Mountain cables are installed May 27 through October 11, 2016 (dates could change) with hopeful preseason lottery applicants waiting to see if they get a permit to climb “the rock.” A law in effect since 2010 limits the number of hikers using the cables in order to protect wilderness character, natural and cultural resources, reduce crowding, and improve safety. A maximum of 300 hikers are allowed (about 225 day hikers and 75 backpackers) each day on the Half Dome Trail beyond the base of the subdome. It usually takes about 12 hours to complete the climb which allows hikers to reach the top without tools. There also are daily lotteries — see details on recreation.gov!
